Blountstown Tigers overcome LCHS Bulldogs by a single point to take district title

A crowd of almost 2,000 fans were treated to a game that will be talked about for years as the Blountstown Tigers squeaked out a one point win over the Liberty County Bulldogs to take the district title 20-19 Friday night in Bristol. The Tigers were ahead 20-13 with 4:10 left in the game when Liberty County took over the ball inside their own 20-yard line. Altha Angels are named District 2 runner-up

The Altha Angels Allstar Team competed in district tournament play last week in Carrabelle. The team, comprised of girls ages 10 and under, was the first allstar team for the Altha Angels. Tournament play began Friday night against Wewa. With a score of 23-9, the Altha Angels were victorious. Josie Hall and Hadley Barfield were pitchers for this game. On Saturday, Altha began the day against Marianna. Josie Hall pitched this game giving up one hit, striking out four and allowing only two walks. The Altha Ozone All Stars began tournament play last week in Havana. Competing against five other teams for the title of district champs, the Altha Ozone was very excited and hoping for a long week. They outscored their opponents 53-24 in five games of district play. In Game 1 on Saturday, the team faced Havana. Behind the pitching of Cody Barfield and Dylan Smith, along with some great offense, the team was victorious, defeating Havana 12-0. The 9U Benders recently visited Lake City to compete in the Florida Northeast State Championship. The weekend did not start off well as the Benders lost both of their seeding games on Saturday. Sunday, however, was a entirely different story. The Benders, playing with their backs against the wall, won three games in a row to capture the Championship. Liberty County O-Zone players place 2nd in District V tournament in Havana

    The Liberty County O-Zone All Stars finished the District V tournament, hosted by Havana, in second place, earning them a berth at the State Dixie Youth Baseball tournament, set to begin July 10 in Sebring. Liberty County, in the District tournament, beat Malone 15-4, lost to Altha 7-6, pummeled Blountstown 19-5 and lost 12-6 in the championship game to Altha Thursday night.

The Liberty County O-Zone All Stars held a fundraiser Saturday morning in Bristol to raise money for their trip to the Dixie Youth Baseball state tournament July 10 in Sebring. The team washed cars and trucks and also sold delicious pulled pork sandwiches. More fundraisers are planned, including one at the annual July 4 celebration in Chattahoochee. FHSAA creates new division for rural school competition

GAINESVILLE – The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted unanimously on June 15 to create a new division to provide additional opportunities for competition for private and public schools in rural areas. The Rural Division would be comprised of member high schools in communities which have been designated as rural by the Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development (OTTED) and whose student enrollment is 500 or less. James Minchew of Wewahitchka (left) hauled in the winner in last week’s annual Liberty County Senior Citizens Flathead Tournament, pulling in a 40.75-lb. fish to earn him a $1,000 check and first place plaque. The top fishermen and women in the tournment are shown below, beginning with Minchew at far left. They include Ronald Earnest, who took second place with a 34.30-pound flathead and won $500.
