Bulldogs win spring game 14-12

by Richard Williams, Journal sports  writer The Blountstown Tigers and the Liberty County Bulldogs ended their Spring football practice with a contest between the two cross-river rivals last Thursday. Each team scored two touchdowns, but the Bulldogs were the only squad to score on an extra point attempt so they took a 14-12 win at Bowles Field in Blountstown. In the Spring game, neither team was allowed to kick or punt so the  Bulldogs started the game withthe ball spotted on the 30-yard  line. Tarak Amin selected for National Telecommunications Scholarship

Tarak Amin, a senior at Blountstown High School, was selected to receive a $1,000 academic scholarship by the Fund for Rural Education and Development (FRED). Sponsored by Fairpoint Communications, the given award is based on merit and demonstrated commitment to rural life. FRED will send the awarded scholarship to Florida State on behalf of Tarak. FRED selected 59 students from rural areas throughout the United States, and received more than 160 exceptional applications sponsored by rural independent telephone companies and cooperatives.

BHS students honored with National Leadership Award

Karis Smith and David Leonard have been awarded the American Youth Foundation’s National Leadership Award in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership. The honor was presented by Sue Price, Assistant Principal, at their award ceremonies held at Blountstown High on May 18. In addition to a certificate of recognition, each recipient received a copy of William H. Danford’s inspirational book, I Dare You! and an opportunity to apply for the “I Dare You” scholarship, which can be applied to the cost of the AYF’s National Leadership Conference located in Michigan.

Tuskegee Airman visits BHS

Students in Mrs. Betts’s eleventh-grade English III classes have been studying/reading about the Tuskegee Airmen. Her students were pleased when Mrs. Betts scheduled Mr. Cornelius Davis, the only Tuskegee Airman born in Blountstown, to share his experiences with them. Mr. Davis has two great-great-great-nephews in the junior class (Paul Mosley and P.J. Buggs) and one in the sophomore class (Jawon Mosely). Mr. Davis is a member of the Detroit chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen and served as an armorer for three years and three months with the Tuskegee Airmen.
