Lawsuit against LCSB ‘was never about money’

January 14, 2011

To the editor, Stories have two sides; this is my side of the recent lawsuit. I would like a point of clarity, I have only filed one lawsuit. I feel your paper misrepresents my actions as implying multiple lawsuits. They have all been one in the same, just different steps in the procedure. The main focus of the lawsuit was the unfair hiring practices of the past two Liberty County School Board Superintendents, David and Sue Summers. As you reported, religious bias only played a part in the unfair and unprofessional way they go about how they conducted and...

Altha police chief disputes CCSO report on arrest of man for hitting landlord

December 17, 2010

To the editor, I, Chief James Baggett of the Altha Police Department, am writing this letter in defense of the Altha Police Department. In the Dec. 8 issue of our local newspapers, there was a sheriff’s report about an Altha man who was charged with battery on a man over 65 after punching the landlord. The Altha Police Department originally investigated the complaint. • The arrest report supplied to the newspapers from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s office failed to mention that the tenant, Amanda Batson, was the complainant who called 911 in the first place. •The sheriff’s report also...

Many helped with monument honoring Jerry Alan Sellers

December 17, 2010

To the editor, I speak for the citizens of the town of Altha in thanking all who supported the raising of the memorial monument to Major Jerry Alan Sellers in Altha on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2010. The success of the program was due in no small part to the many citizens of Altha and Calhoun County who participated and attended the event. I want to give a special note of thanks to Harry Cumbaa, who donated the memorial stone, its preparation and installation by returning the cost to the Major Jerry Alan Sellers Memorial Scholarship Fund. Thanks to...

Calhoun County attorney responds to column on lawsuit, at-large voting

December 3, 2010

To the editor, This letter is written in response to the column featured in your paper regarding “at large elections” in Calhoun County and the lawsuit filed by James Pruette in Federal Court seeking to mandate at large elections in Calhoun County. Mr. Pruette appeared before the Board with an ultimatum. The ultimatum was that the either the County Commission order a return to “at large elections” or else he was going to file suit the next day to require it. The Board, acting on advice of counsel, declined to follow his edict, but did attempt to open a...

Puppy owner concerned over care of animals by breeders

July 9, 2010

To the editor, I bought two small puppies about four weeks apart from two different places that had been advertised locally. I saw one ad for a certain small breed that stated the puppies were seven weeks old and had been wormed. I was told they would grow to about seven pounds. When I arrived at the residence and stood at the front gate I saw lots of grown dogs running around along with a few puppies. I picked out the runt that had come out from under the house. Not exactly where I wanted the puppy I liked...

Inmate responds to letter on prisoners handling the flag

July 9, 2010

To the editor, This is in reference to the letter printed in your paper June 2, 2010. Mr. Mike Bailes complained about the condition and handling of the flags at Liberty Correctional Institution. First issue is that unknown to Mr. Bailes, there are thousands of veterans incarcerated within D.O.C. Also, speaking of Liberty C.I., several staff members, clergy and persons employed in all positions throughout our institution are veterans. I’d also like to point out that our Warden is Mr. C. Douglas, also a veteran, who sees that the veterans incarcerated here at Liberty have meetings associated with veteran...

It’s not Obama’s oil spill but it is his mess to clean up

June 25, 2010

To the editor: After reading through Jim Pruette’s column from last week, and unsuccessfully trying to find “a point,” I couldn’t help but wonder how long it will be before he joins the chorus of Republicans who are blaming Obama for the oil heading for our beaches. I think Republicans like to blame the oil spill and its damage on Obama as a way of clearing their conscience of guilty feelings because this disaster is as much their fault as it is the fault of all Americans for allowing our government to be sold to the highest bidding corporation....

Convicts should not be allowed to handle our flag

June 4, 2010

To the editor, I had reason to be at Liberty Correctional Institution Thursday evening and what I saw was the heartbreaking misuse of our nation’s flag. I watched an inmate take the Florida flag down and wad it into a ball while the U.S. flag was dragging the ground. The U. S. flag was tattered and torn, faded and was being handled by a convicted felon. I wanted so much to retrieve the flag but I could not. The warden and all the persons responsible for this act of gross disrespect should be fired. This to me, especially on...

Citizen wants countywide vote to elect commissioners in Calhoun Co.

June 4, 2010

To the editor, Three elected Calhoun County Commissioners (majority) are keeping the elected Clerk of the Court in a partnership with the County Commission. As a former County Commissioner, it is my opinion this kind of activity is at the root of many problems which cost a large amount of money to taxpayers, ie: These four elected officials are violating their oaths of office. They put their hand on the Bible and took an oath to uphold the Constitution which states, “No person shall serve in but one branch of government at a time.” -Art. II, Sec. 3, Florida...

‘Calhoun-Liberty Hospital was there for me’ says heart attack patient

June 4, 2010

To the editor, Please allow me the opportunity to share my experience with Calhoun-Liberty Hospital. On May 13 after a morning walk at home I felt extreme discomfort in my chest and throat and called my wife to come take me to the emergency room. I called the hospital on the way in and was met by Phillip and Melissa outside the ER door. I was taken into the trauma room and it was quickly determined by Dr. Cartaya and staff that I was having a heart attack. As I looked up at the familiar faces surrounding me I...
