What happens here in 20 years starts with you today

February 3, 2012

To the editor, Twenty years from now… I recently participated in and experienced two different events that caused me to pause and reflect on a 40-year time frame. Two weeks ago, my family and I attended the Homecoming game at Altha Public School when the Altha Wildcats took on and defeated the Bethlehem Wildcats. Congratulations to the Junior Varsity and Varsity for the wins over the opponents. We were there in part to support the basketball team, but also to celebrate with the class of 1992. My wife, Michelle (Pitts) Yoder, graduated in 1992 and her class was recognized...

Biased media coverage apparent in the Presidential Race

January 27, 2012

To the editor: I have watched with great interest the presidential debates and developments in this election cycle. I am looking for a leader who understands the urgency of the hour, has traditional American Judeo-Christian values, has the guts to step outside the “politically correct box”, and the leadership ability to change the Washington mindset. But all these qualities are to no avail unless the candidate can first get through the media minefield. Furthermore, a candidate can possess all the right stuff but unless he can be elected, America is still on course with the Titanic. I have watched...

Is county equipment being used on private property?

November 11, 2011

To the editor, On Oct. 28 I saw a Calhoun County dump truck traveling south on Myers Dairy Road, crossing Bullhead Bay Road. I knew that the property to the south of Bullhead Bay Road was privately owned. I followed that Calhoun County equipment (two excavators and many dump trucks) that was being used to widen an existing two trail road. There are zero houses on Myers Dairy Road south of Bullhead Bay Road nor are there any on Pole Road, the two roads being widened. The two roads have also have lime rock spread and packed at an...

Bear Management Plan will be discussed in Nov. 22 meeting at civic center in Bristol

November 11, 2011

To the editor, Hunting season has finally rolled around and the conflicts between hunters and black bears have begun. Some of you may not know but in 2011 the black bear in Florida was removed from the endangered/threatened list by experts associated with the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). This does not mean that there is now a season for hunting bears, it just means that we are one step closer to regaining the privilege that was taken from sportsmen and women in Florida. If you take the time to look on any website about bears in...

Reader responds to letter from mother alleging son & friends were harrassed

November 4, 2011

To the editor, I am writing in reference to the lady who wrote that her 19-year-old child and his level headed friends are continually being harassed for just hanging out. The football field is paid for by tax payers and is not designated a hangout. No one has singled out your child nor are he and his friends being harassed. If a complaint is filed then our sheriff and his deputies must react to the call. Someone filed a complaint! You stated they moved their “hangout” to the forest and because they were being “watched,” they decided to move...

Local candidates are urged to pay more attention to issues and less to skin color

November 4, 2011

To the editor, Elections for 2012 are approximately one year away. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the historic 2009 presidential election. President Obama was the first African-American to be elected President of the United States. As I have observed, listened and researched President Obama’s job performance, he has executed the duties of the presidency with integrity, commitment and perseverance despite the blatant disrespect to the man and the office he currently holds. African-Americans whether they are Democrat, Republican or Independent have always given respect to the President of the United States. We may not...

Make your family aware of a new tactic used by computer hackers

November 4, 2011

To the editor, I’m writing this letter to inform computer owners of something that happened to me just last week at home. I received a phone call from a private caller who insisted he needed to walk me through some steps on my computer to prevent a virus I was about to get in Windows. Even if you are on the Do Not Call Registry list from solicitors, don’t be so sure it’s not one of them or even worse, a computer hacker. I asked him, “What is your company’s name since it’s not showing up on my caller...

Where are kids supposed to go to hang out with their friends?

October 28, 2011

To the editor, As parents of a 19-year-old, let us start by saying we are extremely proud of him. He, along with his close friends have made clear and level headed choices in their lives. They are all wonderful boys that enjoy spending time together in the woods with their trucks and being boys. However, it seems that they are continuously being harassed and singled out. They were hanging out at the football field until being threatened with charges of trespassing. They moved their hangout to the forest, riding in the woods, staying out of town and trouble. Before...

Occupy movement’s theme unites the working class

October 21, 2011

To the editor, In less than one month, Occupy Wall Street has grown from a handful of protestors in a New York City park to tens of thousands of protestors across the globe. Never before in the history of humanity has a protest spread so far so fast. And never before has the world seen such a diverse movement, joined by dissatisfied people from just about every nationality, race, age group, religion and social background. While the media and the pundits stand bewildered by this movement’s absence of leaders and clear demands, I suggest that those factors are the...

Panthers, black bears should be added to FWC mapping program

October 14, 2011

To the editor, I am fascinated by the fox squirrel mapping program being conducted by FWC Biologist Courtney Hooker. Anyone sighting a fox squirrel can go online and record the sighting on FWC’s Google map. So far 600 sightings have been reported. This technology could also be applied to panthers and black bears. This would be an economical way to determine the number of black bears, which is highly disputed, along with their location. Sincerely, Bill Lett, Havana *The article Bill Lett is referring to ran in the Oct. 5 issue of The Journal and can also be...
