Liberty County races already have four candidates; One incumbent files to run in Calhoun County Candidates begin filing intent to seek office in upcoming election

Candidates have started filing their intent to seek office in the upcoming Primary Election, which will be held Tuesday, Aug. 28.
The positions of county judge, three seats on the school board and two county commissioner spots will be on the ballot.

In Calhoun County, the District 3, 4 and 5 school board seats currently held by Clifford Newsome, Kenneth Speights and Danny Hassig will be up for election.
The two Calhoun County Commission seats that will come open are in District 2 and 4. The incumbents are Darrell McDougald and Dennis Jones.
Calhoun County Judge Kevin Grover has not yet filed his intent to run but has indicated that he will seek another term.
The first candidate to make his intent to run known is Danny Hassig, 56, who will seek another term on the school board.
As of Tuesday, Calhoun County had 8,632 active registered voters. That total includes 5,255 Democrats, 2,398 Republicans and 979 who list other political affiliations.

The District 3, 4 and 5 seats on the Liberty County School Board, currently held by Darrel L. “Doobie” Hayes, Kyle Peddie and Roger Reddick are up for election.
Voters will also be asked to select candidates to occupy the District 2 and 4 seats on the Liberty County Commission. Those spots are currently held by Dexter Barber and James “Bo” Sanders.
Incumbent County Judge Ken Hosford is seeking re-election and already has an opponent.
Hosford, 60, filed his intent to run this past Sept. 10, 2017. One challenger, David Jackson Summers, 36, filed his intent to seek the position Jan. 5.
Others who have come forward include:
•Charles “Boo” Morris, 42, who is running for the District 5 School Board seat.
•Cathia Schmarje, 57, who is seeking the District 3 spot on the school board.
Liberty County has 4,316 voters, which includes 3,201 Democrats, 759 Republicans and 356 with other political affiliations.
