BLOUNTSTOWN - A man who was found unconscious on the sidewalk outside a convenience store Monday later died despite efforts by customers and EMS to revive him, according to Blountstown Police Chief Mark Mallory.

A police officer and ambulances were dispatched to the 20406 Central Ave. West at Texaco around 10:43 a.m. Jan. 1.

BPD Officer Christian Smith arrived to find the white male still on the ground and not breathing as store patrons continued CPR efforts. EMS arrived soon afterwards and took over, transporting the man to Calhoun Liberty Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The deceased was identified as 67-year-old James Hunter of Blountstown. Hunter had been riding a bicycle in the area shortly before he collapsed.

The police department was able to reach Hunter’s ex-wife, who said she believed he suffered from leukemia. She said he did not keep in touch with any of his family.
