Attempted lane change on I-10 leaves two vehicles on guardrail

by Teresa Eubanks, Journal Editor

A 74-year-old woman was hospitalized with serious injuries after she attempted to turn off I-10 at the last minute but instead drove into the path of an oncoming semi in the outside lane Tuesday morning in Jackson County.

Anita Kay Bishop of Council Bluffs, Iowa was eastbound along the interstate around 10:49 a.m., traveling in the inside lane while a 2015 Kenworth tractor-trailer was heading the same way just behind her in the outside lane, according to the FHP report.

She failed to see the truck, driven by Toribio Mendoza, 51, of Spring, TX, as she moved into his lane near the 130-mile marker interchange.  Her 2014 Dodge Journey collided with the truck as she attempted to reach the exit. She was taken to Jackson County Hospital.  The truck driver was not injured.  Both were wearing seat restraints.
