Commission grants oil company’s request to amend comp. plan

by Teresa Eubanks, Journal Editor

The Calhoun County Commission voted 4-0 to amend the Calhoun County Comprehensive Plan and the county’s land development code at Tuesday night’s meeting in Blountstown.

Those voting in favor were Chairman Danny Wise, Darrell McDougald, Jeral Hall and Gene Baily.   Commissioner Dennis Jones,  who had previously voted against the amendments, was not present at the meeting.

That decision is the first step toward allowing Cholla Petroleum Inc. to drill for oil on Neal Land and Timber Company in southwest Calhoun County.

The amendments will be reviewed by state and federal regulatory agencies.  If approved, the amended plans will go back to the county commission for final action.

The petroleum company’s first step would be to drill an exploratory well to determine if they can find oil.  If successful, they will face further permitting steps before going forward.
