Hunter is killed when tree falls on tripod stand

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man killed by a falling tree Tuesday as 61-year-old Benny Hollis.

Hollis had been sitting on a 12-foot-high tripod hunting stand when strong storm winds uprooted a massive tree which then fell on him, according to Sheriff Glenn Kimbrel.

When he failed to return home as expected, his wife went to the Ocheesee Landing Road area to check on him. She discovered his body under sections of the tree stand. The sheriff’s office was notified just after 8 p.m.

The sheriff said he believed Hollis left home around 2:30 p.m. to go to the woods. He estimated that the accident happened around 5:30 p.m.

Hollis was pronounced dead at the scene.
