Saturday morning fire destroys kiln at Rex Lumber
A fire that broke out at Rex Lumber in Bristol Saturday morning destroyed one of the company’s continuous kilns. The cause of the blaze is unknown. Firefighters were paged out at 7:15 a.m. and arrived to find the dry kiln building engulfed in flames, sending up plumes of smoke visible for two miles. Volunteers from the Estiffanulga and Hosford Fire Departments joined Bristol firefighters in battling the blaze, which was kept very hot as stacked piles of lumber burned. Firefighters poured thousands of gallons of water on the site and remained on scene for several hours. No injuries were reported. A company spokesman said they will continue operations at a reduced level until a new kiln can be built.
