Visitors to Saturday’s Archaeology Day, held at the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement in Blountstown, got a treat when they discovered a unique display of items connected to the Confederate Signal Corps. The Signal Corps performed tactical communications during the Civil War, including “wig-wag signaling” which was accomplished during daylight hours with a pair of red and white flags tied to a hickory stick. The collection was brought to Blountstown by Lionel Young, coordinator of the NW Florida Living History Association in Marianna.
- Two of the actual flags that were once used.
- Another authentic piece of equipment is a pair of binoculars.
